The 31st AUSTRIAN WOMEN´S RUN

Was werde ich danach machen?
Was habe ich Ende Mai erwartet?

The 31st AUSTRIAN WOMEN´S RUN
On May 16th I get an email from the Austrian women´s run. It´s around 9:45pm when I open the email with lots of excitement. My heart is pounding when I read the information about the bib number, goodie bag and shirts. The 31st Austrian Women´s Run is almost there. Only 11 days are separating me from the starting shot.
"11 weeks of running preparation", in which I had put all my energy, strenght and time, came to an end. "11 weeks long" I had to persuade myself a hundered times to do my workout out, I excercised with a group full of motivated women and I searched for various information about running on the internet. "11 weeks long" I hoped that I would undercut the 28minutes mark. Hope dies last", as the saying goes.
On one hand I´m glad that it all will be over soon - not only the summer weather had complicated my workouts on the other hand my motivation is slowly decreasing. It´s just too much for me. In addition, I already get nostalgic because the challenge is ending. What will I do after that?
Well, I already had something in my mind and I was really looking forward to the new one. I cannot imagine my life without running anyway. Running became a fix part of my life.
One week before the event I change my diet once again and pay more attention to eating enough carbohydrates and getting enough liquid. I dutifully follow the e-mails with nutrition hints from the Austrian Women´s Run and integrate them into my diet.
On Saturday I can not only finally pick-up my bib number, goodie bag and shirt, but as a part of the entertainment program of the Austrian Women´s Run I can also participate in yoga, zumba and other activities. I enjoy the marvelous atmosphere in the zumba group, where lots of motivated girls and women jump around and dance. It´s a great feeling. I enjoy the day a lot, even though there is a crazy heat.
The whole week I am wishing that the temperature will drop to 15-18 degrees. Instead It´s a blazing heat and the weather forecast for Sunday doesn´t look that promising - 27 degrees. No rain at night, but bathing weather. What did I expect at the end of May? - A blizzard??
I wake up at 6:00am next day. I take a shower and have my breakfast. Then I get dressed - shorts, a bra and a crop top. I slip into my running shoes and head towards to the subway station. Many runners are on their way to Stadion Centre and many of them are wearing the Asics shirt that I also got as a gift. I didn´t want to wear it because it was too hot. I chose a black outfit instead. Black is my favourite colour. I associate black sports-clothes and green accessories (my pulse-watch) automatically with energy, strength and hope. And hope dies last.
After handing over my personal belongings in the cloack room, I warm up. The warming up is very uncomfortable - there are people standing or walking everywhere. I can´t really turn my thoughts off and focus on myself.
Then I am looking for block E. Hopefully, the run will be no e-e run, since the weather is so nasty. At least I have a programm for the afternoon now - swimming. I´m in my block and try to calm down. I get a dull feeling in my stomach. I take a deep breath, I exhale and do it again. A lady standing next to me asks if I‘m feeling well. I nod and tell her that I´m nervous. She laughs and replies that it won‘t be so bad. I know that, too - it‘s not a matter of life and death but it still is about my personal best time.
My thoughts are getting interrupted by the starting shot. Block A, the elite and fastest runners, are starting.  I move forwards with the other runners up to the start line. Block B and C are starting next. I can manage that. I must not go too fast in the beginning, take it slow", Im thinking by myself. Now its my turn, here is my starting shot. I start running. There are many runners on the road and I can´t run properly at the first few meters. I try to weave through the people to get ahead faster. My tension drops slowly. The 500 meter mark is here. I don´t even check my heart rate watch to avoid more stress. My goal is: running slowly for the first 3 kilometers (5:30 pace) and then speed up at the last 2 kilometers (5:15-5:20). Can I manage that in this weather?
The first three and half kilometers are pleasant. I jog along Lusthaustraße, which offers enough shade. In contrast, the last 1,5 kilometers through Hauptallee are one katastrophy. It´s really hot. I regret not taking a cup of mineral water on the track to douse myself with it. I´m really hot and I´m afraid to speed up because I don´t want to black out.
I really suffer at the last 500 meters. I clench my teeth to move faster. The sun burns mercilessly. Beads of perspiration are forming on my forehead and slowly but steady are turning into small streams and run down my temples. I´m afraid of collapsing. Finally I have crossed the finish line.
I bend down and lean into my knees. I take a deep breath. I´m terribly thirsty and I´m hot. A lady approaches me and tells me to move so it doesn´t get staunched. I pull myself together and start to move forward. I´m getting on a bit. I check my heart rate watch - they show me nearly 30 minutes. How fast did I actually run? Did I manage the 28:00 minutes mark at least? My head is overfilled with differents thoughts.
I get my results from the website of the Austrian Women´s Run: 28:50 minutes. I didn´t reach my goal. I failed again. But this time I only feel satisfaction - no anger and no frustration.
I really enjoyed the run. It´s an incredible feeling to run with over 19 000 women. We didn´t run at the same time, but we had some things in common - to finish and have fun. Well, the heat had partly ruined the fun. But I still felt many positive vibrations - the joy and the enthusiasm that surrounded this whole run. The event was full of emotions. And I want to participate again next year. And next time I will manage to get through it in under 28:00 minutes....hope dies last, doesn‘t it?
